Terry hit the nail on the head when she addressed the habit of newborn
suctioning.  I had a similar pet peeve at our hospital.  What was funny was
whenever I asked one of our peds if it was OK if I only suctioned if it
looked necessary they said sure and were very surprised that the hospital
policy was to deep suction all newborns.  The rationale being as Terry said
to test for TE fistula. So guess what I did, wrote some new policies and
showed the current standards and  (almost a year later) it's off the books.
The things we do because we've always done them this way!!!! Go forth and
stir things up.    I think these things up on the night shift.  They can
always tell when I've had a slow night.
