Judy:
I have heard reports of intubation causing both nipple/breast refual
and seen one case where patate sustained injury..this babay also did not
feed.
I vaguely (sp) recall a case where infant "forced" onto the breast
following invasive oral procedure who the identified the breast with the
previous trauma.

"The position of the tongue during rooting reflexes eliceted in newborn
infants before the first suckle" - healthy infants place their tongue oin
the palate when crying. this might be a security refles, to prevent
obstruction of the trachea during the inspiration phase. one way the problem
of infants placeing their tongue in their palate might come about is in the
process of forcing a crying babu to the breast, even if the force is gentle.
at the next feed the infant might remember the forced situation and defent
inself by placing its tongue on the palate.
