Hi, all: I've seen a few posts about adoptive mothers nursing. An
acquaintance of mine is currently working at this with her two-week old
baby. She did not pump before she got the baby. Has been putting baby
to breast with SNS and baby has only had three bottles since birth. Baby
taking 2-2 1/2 oz of formula through SNS at a feeding and mother has not
produced anything herself, not even colostrum, but has noted some
bilateral breast discomfort and possibly some enlargement of her breasts
in the last couple of days. I am not treating her. I will recommend a
local LC with experience in this area and a LLL leader with similar
experience, as I believe she could use a lot of support and has been
doing this all by herself till now (with the exception of an initial LC
consult at the birth hospital far, far away). Her question to me was how
soon she might expect to start seeing some milk production of her own.
I'll be glad to hear personal experiences as well as any literature on
this subject. Thanks, Alicia. [log in to unmask]
