>Hello Today I attended a lecture given by Dr. Allan Lucas, the often cited
>researcher from Cambridge England who did the long term studies on preterm
>human milk and IQ (also on it's protection against NEC)
Sue,
I, too, attended a talk given by Allan Lucas here in Brisbane last year,
about his research. Actually it was quite good and his research supports
breastfeeding extremely well, however he did finish it by recommending that
preterm babies should have fortifier - which was not supported anywhere in
all the research he had just presented to us. It's amazing what a hold the
sponsor can get on some people isn't it! :-(
At the same conference the woman in charge of one of our major hospitals
here in Brisbane gave the most disturbing talk on how breastfeeding couldn't
be shown to improve the health of babies and that their hospital wasn't
going to go Baby Friendly, because Baby Friendly wasn't 'mother friendly'! :-(
And another spokesman (a paed) went through the 10 Steps one by one
comparing them to the research in the Effective Care in Pregnancy and
Childbirth by Enkin, et al and suggested that they weren't supported by
research. :-(
I was so stunned by the entire proceedings that I couldn't say a thing and
ended up not being able to sleep for two nights while I composed all the
things I wish I had said.
Yes I think your suggestion of a letter is good. How about getting his
research and putting up comparative tables on notice boards and highlighting
paragraphs which say what his research really did find. Good luck.
