Jan and all,
I teach prenatal nutrition among other things and was participating in a
Midwive's listserve before lactnet (can't handle anything else now!) when
the topic of calcium came up. I have a calcium food source sheet that I
derived from a couple of sources and hand out to moms, and I mentioned
this, along with major sources of calcium, including good old XXXX. What
really surprised me was that a midwife wrote back some concerns about the
antacid calcium: she said that they had noted "calcification" of the
placenta in pregnancies where mom took a lot of XXXX, and that there were
other concerns as to how well it was metabolized. As a result, she does
not recommend this as a supplement anymore. Has anyone else heard
anything such as this? I've modified my source list since.
-Lisa
