I just came across something interesting while researching use of pitocin as
a substitute for syntocinon. My local pharmacist copied his info on
oxytocin, and two things jumped out at me:

1) We all know that pitocin is indicated to control hemorrhaging, but
did you know that the adverse reactions listed included postpartum
hemmorrhage? I still pondering that one....

2) Listed under "precautions" was this statement: "Water intoxication:
Oxytocin has an intrinsic antidiuretic effect, acting to increase water
reabsorption from the glomerular filtrate. consider the possibility of
water intoxication, particularly when oxytocin is administered by
continuous infusion and the patient is receiving fluids by mouth." I am
wondering about our previous discussions on observed areolar edema
associated with epidurals, as pitocin is also often associated with
epidural use. Could this be a hidden factor?
