I tell people to download this text, as it provides real-world applications,  has lots of illustrations, and assumes that you had a horrible math teacher who scarred you for life.

The Cartoon Guide to Statistics (Larry Gonick, Woollcott Smith, who also wrote the entertaining "Cartoon History of the Universe", and other "Cartoon Guides" and "Cartoon Introductions" - all are gems)
