Evolutionarily, if an individual's only chance of getting their genes into
the next generation would be to produce small drones, there might be a
fitness benefit from doing so, especially if the colony had gone queenless
at a time of year when queenright colonies were not producing many drones.
Even the little guys might then have a chance!
