"can inhibit bacterial growth completely as its osmotic pressure will cause the transport of water out..."
Other things can do the same.  Glycerin or propylene glycol should be excellent, even better than honey, if all that matters is osmotic pressure yet I hear of no one using either. A saturated table salt solution would be better than sugar yet I do not hear it being pushed as a treatment.  Perhaps due to the pain it would cause?  People have used alcohol for this purpose for a long time and it causes significant pain so what is wrong with salt?  A saturated sugar solution is not going to be nearly as effective as honey.  A saturated sugar solution only has about 1/4 the molar concentration of dissolved material so is going to have a lot lower osmotic pressure than honey.  Also mild dilution will make it ineffective while the same dilution would not make honey ineffective.
