Experienced beekeepers are well acquainted with the differences in characteristics and performance shown by a number of colonies of the same strain when placed in the same apiary and under identical conditions, if they are left to the breeding powers of unaided Nature. The average yield per colony decreases, although there are a few which give phenomenal returns-and those which fail completely. This low average yield is the most striking feature of strains bred by natural selection. But it is precisely this average yield over a number of years which determines whether beekeeping is profitable or not.— Brother Adam (1954) Bee Breeding, Bee World
