In 2020-2022 I did a trial comparing single vs double vs oxalic on as many as 32 hives each year equally divided into 4 treatment groups. While all treatments worked, single pad treatment was the winner for me. I had to apply oxalic as many as 16 times to get mite counts down to 1% or less for all hives in that treatment group. Over the 3 years I lost 10% of the queens in double pad treatment group and had some colonies where the queen shut down brood laying for a few days during the treatment.
Other than extra time applying treatment twice to the hives, I've had no other issues with single pad treatment group.
I did the experiment with Formic Pro and MAQS, and all treatments were applied in August and September each year.
