Returning to what I understand is the ethos of the study under consideration, there is lots of scholarship emerging that suggests that resistance is a population-level trait.
As a practical matter, this suggests that Mother Nature is relentlessly selecting for survival and perhaps our role is not so much to work outside the population but rather with a subset within it- selecting for traits we want and possibly helping to intensify beneficial resistance alleles via our efforts.
