Given that they seem to use this "management" technique regularly, it must be working for them

Given that most of these never have a control, what's working for them may not be working at all.
All of us with a stationary apiary for more than a few years know that any swarms tend to bivouac on the same post or tree.   If as swarms emerge, and the beekeeper bangs pots, sings, yells, throw things, etc., and then when the swarms settles on its customary post or tree, the beekeeper will proclaim that its working!
