Even when removing "every trace" of the hive, returning bees do not all drift to the nearest remaining hive.
Making splits, there are always some stubborn bees that return to the original hive site, and sit on the grass in a group, waiting for the hive to magically reappear.
I feel sad for these bees, but I've met beekeepers who were more stubborn.
