The original post said "field force," not "foraging force" -- an important
detail!
And it left out a second important detail -- to disturb the moved hive
(open it or even kick it). The disturbance will cause defensive workers to
fly out, but they will return to the original location.
We use this technique on a daily basis this time of year, while we break
down strong double-deep colonies to make about 3000 nucs. We break apart
the two boxes and move them about 30 feet away to the nuc-making table.
Any defensive bees fly back home (where we either return the queen, or
remove every trace of the hive so that the returning bees drift to the
nearest remaining hive).
