Hello all
I was introduced to an exclusively pumping mother at a social occasion, so
no medical history yet been taken, but I will be seeing her next week. She
expresses a great desire to latch the baby and feed directly.
She had inverted nipples and the baby never latched. A brief look at her
nipples (sounds like an interesting social occasion!) showed that they are
now everted, and there were no visible signs of damage or exudate. The
mother described them as burning and raw, so I urged her to see her doctor
and then get back to me if necessary.
She first reported, 'The doctor diagnosed a bacterial infection/ low grade
mastitis. I am now on a course of antibiotics followed by an anti fungal.'
She sounded very hopeful at the time.
After the test results came back, there was no infection found and she was
told to stop taking the antibiotics. There has been no improvement in the
state of the nipples. She has never even held the baby skin to skin as her
nipples are too sore, and this is so sad.
Has anyone else seen previously inverted nipples feeling raw for this long
(3 months) without breastfeeding? (Pumps on lowest setting). I'm
probably over-reaching now, but I'm thinking of how to rule out Paget's
disease - too far to leap yet? Any other questions I should ask when I see
her?
Best wishes
Jacquie Nutt
