Subject: Re: other milks

What I have wondered about is how similar are the milks of the great apes (chimps, bonobos and gorillas) to human milk.  The species are pretty genetically close to Homo sapiens and they mother their young in a way where mom and baby are in pretty much constant contact, IOW, attachment parenting.

So you made me go pull files, LOL " Elephant milk and human milk are unique with regard to their content and variety of neutral and acidic lactose-derived oligosaccharides compared with any other species,  Considering that in human milk more than 130 components have been characterized so far, and many more expected, it is surprising that the oligosaccharide pattern in elephant milk is even more complex and the total concentration is even higher." MSF-10605, 1999.  Maybe size of the baby has something to do with different amounts of oligisaccharides.
What I don't understand is why researchers don't realize that the size of the baby, length of time needing milk, patterns of feeding and so on don't make a significant difference in the composition of milk.  I guess if you are a zoo keeper and feeding orphan animals you need to know how to fix their "formula."  Pat in SNJ
