Dear Lactnet Friends:

Kratom has been used for centuries. It has some potentially good uses. The
trouble is that any substance with psychotropic effects will be abused by
many in Western society. To illustrate, the person in the case cited in
this Wikipedia entry had taken 6 packets (how many doses was that?) with
alcohol.

Cocaine, as it was used by native peoples in the Andes, was like a cup of
coffee for them. The coco leaves were chewed and gave them energy to live
better in a high altitude cold place. It wasn't until the active principle
was identified and made that the innocent cocal leaf became abused vilified.

Andrew Weil MD and Michael Pollan have both published lovely books about
familiar or maligned plants.

The US citizenry's demand for drugs has a major contributing factor to the
violence in Mexico. Dr. Michel Odent, in his Primal Health Network, gives
rise to the notion that when babies are exposed to narcotics and
neurotranmitters during labor and birth, their brains are made susceptible
to drugs of abuse. Interesting idea.

warmly,
