Virginia has taken words out of my mouth - only more eloquently!  
Pumps seem to be considered as "essential" to breastfeeding.  Few mothers (here at least) are shown how to use them correctly and effectively and interpret the resulting poor yield as confirmation of a poor milk supply.  I have seen too many women abandon breastfeeding as a result of injudicious pump use.
I do appreciate that where maternity benefits are limited or non-existent, mothers need to get back to work very soon.  But a well-latched, effectively-feeding baby at the breast - when mother is at home - enhances milk supply and makes life so much easier.
