PTP. Does anyone have experience with Beaugen brand breast pump cushions?
They are stretchy inserts that are inserted into a hard flange. (Pictures
can be seen at beaugen.com) Mom recently noticed a purplish line forming at
the base of her nipples (where the nipple meets the areola). In a picture
she sent, I could see a ring of purplish color and I noticed the beginning
of a crack forming along the same line. (Picture because I am currently
counseling her remotely.)

Have you ever seen this kind of nipple trauma from the Beaugen inserts?

Background: Baby is 4.5 mo. old male, mom returned to work this week on
Monday. Mom has been pumping since baby was born d/t early separation
(NICU), breast refusal, and latch issues secondary to tongue tie. Other hx:
baby had a minor (sub-therapeutic) tongue-tie release at 2 weeks (parents
elected not to find another practitioner), 2-3 episodes of thrush in the
last 4 months (nipple and baby’s mouth), and baby on Zantac for GERD. Mom
was pumping 4 x a day, and 2-3 weeks ago increased to 5 x a day to get
ready for work. I observed high elasticity of nipples in person within the
first month after baby was born. Mom uses a small amount of oil on her
nipples while pumping to reduce friction from the flange. Initially, she
was using 27mm Medela hard flanges with a Spectra pump. Flanges appeared a
bit large to me, but since there were no negative consequences at the time,
she stayed with the 27 mm until recently. I learned today that she is now
using 24 mm flange with Beaugen inserts and a Spectra pump PLUS Willow pump
(followed by Spectra pump to finish off while learning the Willow pump).

I highly suspect the Beaugen inserts as the cause of early nipple trauma,
but would like to know if any other LCs have any experience with clients
getting nipple trauma with them.

Thank you!
