Cindy, a colleague of mine researched this for a client and then presented a case study. I clearly remember that the mother was advised to stop breastfeeding by her physician only to discover that she need not have done so and attempted relactation. I don't remember the details; and my colleague is sadly no longer with us. Will see it I can find notes I may have taken.....

Dear Wise Ones,

I received a question about adoptive breastfeeding a baby whose mother was positive for Hep B and C. She is concerned about possible baby-to-mother transfer if she would develop a crack in the early nursing period. I have not found any information in the literature about this aspect. Adoptive mother is checking to see if baby was started with the Hep series in the hospital. Knows she can have bloodwork done to check baby's exposure but still wants to know about possible transfer form baby to her.

Many thanks,

Cindy Garrison BS IBCLC
