Hi Kika,

About sucking pressures-

Prieto CR, Cardenas H et al 'Sucking pressure and its relationship to milk transfer during breastfeeding in humans; J of Reproduction and Fertility 1996 (108) 69-74

'Average values for the mean and max sucking pressures were -50 and -197 mmHg' based on 27 recordings using a pressure transducer attached to the nipple.

There are a few other more recent studies generally showing about the same range of pressures.

If you need copies of studies, email me privately.

Subject: Intraoral negative pressure during suck

Hi!!

A question... Going through some old presentations, I had written back in

2004 that peak intraoral negative pressure during breastfeeding could reach

-240 mmHg. I have no idea right now where I got that information. According to Geddes (2008 and 2012), peak negative pressure is either -122 or -145.

Elad and cols, in their 2014 US study using a model, say it ranges from -20 to -40.

I don´t have Cathy Genna´s Sucking Skills book here at home so I can´t look it up...

Any light to shed, anyone?

Thanks!

KIka
