Dear Molly, to my way of thinking a plugged duct will resolve with the
usual treatment in approximately 24 hours. If it does not it is likely a
mastitis and needs to be referred back to a primary provider. Ultrasound is
certainly one way to obtain a diagnosis. I also recommend a clean catch no
culture especially when things are occurring in the same spot. Inflammatory
breast cancer cannot be ruled out either at this point in my opinion.
