Dear Tricia,
I am no expert of feeding IUGR or preterm babies. However, I do feel I
can spot a little one still needing to catch up on becoming a healthy
weight or an over weight baby. This is where I believe you have to use
your eyes. Does he still look a little thin? If so, he is still in catch
up mode. Once he plumps up, my guess is, if she is really using paced
bottle feeding and working on getting him to the breast, he will balance
himself with his intake. Dr. Smillie describes this cycle of not being
hungry, then ravenous, then balancing, nicely in the Core Curriculum for
Interdisciplinary Lactation Care Pages 357 and 358.
Remember, the amount the baby is eating is just one piece of
information. You have to look at the big picture.
What do you think?
Warmly,
--
