Our hospital has a co bedding waiver that we have the mother sign and we educate on the risks of sleeping with baby. This helps us to allow the mothers to make educated decisions, and in doing that, we also put the responsibility for safety with them as well.
We also encourage moms to have supervision, especially when taking narcotics, to be sure they are alert enough to be safe, we strongly encourage family to care for newborn when mom is on narcotics. We try to encourage time in the crib when mom is sleeping, but the waiver gives our moms options. We frequently check in on our moms and babies who are choosing to cosleep. We educate throughout stay on dangers of co sleeping both during their stay and at home. I am thrilled to work for a Baby Friendly hospital that supports skin to skin, and understands the importance of this contact in the early days of breastfeeding!!
