Dear Lactnet Friends:
How many of us have struggled to help families accept the notion of paying
for a consultation? And, of having more than one visit as part of
breastfeeding rehabilitation?
Last century (LOL), I published an article in JHL (1997) reporting on the
work done with 600 dyads, in a midwifery care model. 43% for at least 3
months if they received an average of 9 telephone calls in the first 3
months: daily phone calls for the first 5 to 7 days, 1 to 3 calls in the
next few weeks, and gradually tapering away, although clients could always
call me whenever they wished. The question asked of them was, "When do you
want me to call again?"
My husband received 3 hours of therapy a day when he was recovering from
the paralysis of Guillain-Barré Syndrome: 2 of physical therapy and 1 of
occupational therapy. An excellent model.
Daily visits would be ideal, until the dyad find their groove. Dream on,
Deborah Swank!! Regular contact has a better chance when the dyad is part
of a community and a tradition of taking care of the new family....
sigh.
warmly
