Julie,I had a client who had a hysterectomy 2 weeks after giving birth to her first child. She was able to bring in a milk supply, but was never able to breastfeed her first baby. There were several years between her two children. She went on to induce lactation with her second (adopted) baby. She had to stop taking estrogen for quite a few months, but she was able to induce lactation, supported by a Lact-aid at breast.

Subject: Question about induced lactation

PTP

I had a long conversation with a woman just now who will be fostering a 4
month old.  She is exploring breastfeeding the baby.  And it's allowed.
The catch is that because she had uterine cancer as a teenager, she takes
birth control pills daily as hormone replacement.  She is taking Aviane,
which contains 0.1 mg levonorgestrel and .02 mg estradiol per pill (day).
She can stop taking them for several months, after discussing with her
doctor.

What are the chances she would be able to produce milk a) with continuing
to take the pill or b) stopping it?

We discussed other options and possibilities as well.  She just wants to
know if she should put in a lot of effort for something that's never going
to happen.

Thanks
Julie Tardos
