A few years ago one of my clients returned to work when her baby was six
months old and she was still breastfeeding. She discussed with the
child-care director that she would bring bottles of expressed milk every day
and was horrified when told that it was too confusing for the staff to have
to keep her bottles separate from all the other formula made up and
refrigerated. She did not have an alternative child-care centre near enough
to home or work and she did not have a car.
The child-care centre was part of a chain run by a women`s movement who
fight for the rights of working mothers. So without mentioning her name, I
approached the regional head who was equally horrified and got the situation
sorted out without delay. So every mother who is refused the right to have
her baby exclusively fed with her own milk should if possible choose an
alternative child-care centre, or if that is not feasible - kick up a fuss.
