Yes I would immediately start hand expressing and spoon-feeding. The
Stanford University video series first hour is excellent as it shows what
to do if baby does not latch. This can work for maybe 36 hours I'm just
giving an estimate. The baby and the mother are being evaluated
continuously if the baby is not voiding stooling or begins to have jaundice
or seems very very hungry or something like that then alternative things
need to be looked at but typically a mother can provide enough colostrum
keeping the baby skin-to-skin. Allowing the baby to suck on a finger with
some colostrum and then sort of bait and switch near the breast could also
work. I am not a fan of long-term syringe or other types of feeding but I
actually prefer paced bottle feeding when the baby begins to need more milk
after 48 Hours certainly. Just my thoughts.
