Every morning I draw up a system generated list of all mums and babies in post natal, birthing and SCBU.

I then go down to the 3 areas and discuss each dyad with the assigned midwife to ascertain progress. I aim to see every pair to offer support, promote our app, hand out info and generally check all is well. If a specific problem is identified then I work with the midwife caring for them to assess and develop a plan.

I also receive direct referrals by phone, internal mail, email during times I am away (I work 4 x 8 hour days.)

I am also available for al breastfeeding mums including staff in any part of the hospital. I have referrals from pre op clinics to help BF mums with planned surgery to manage feeding.

We are a fully BFI accredited hospital so all midwives and staff nurses in the unit are able to provide first line lactation management-they receive 21 hours education on commencement of employment and minimum 4 hours every year subsequently-I provide all this as well. In addition I am the BFHI coordinator so I keep both maternity units BFHI and WHO code compliant.

In addition we have 2 community lactation consultants who see women in their homes or clinics in our Health board area. We have a big geographical area, 100,000 population and 9,570 square kilometres Rotorua to Turangi with a primary unit in Taupo and a secondary unit in Rotorua

For inpatient lactation services, Do you see every patient every day?

or do you have criteria that triggers a consult? If so would you share what criteria?

Also, does the bedside nurse do any of the breastfeeding education?

Thanks
