Our hospital lactation department is starting a more pointed conversation with pharmacy about medication and lactation to try and counter “pump and dump” as a first recommendation instead of “pump and label until closer review”. As you know, milk dumped unnecessarily can never be recovered.
My goal is to establish a collaborative mindset that encourages input from the mother, pharmacy and lactation. I have a couple female pharmacists that have breastfed their children and are willing to help advocate a mindset change with us.
Understandably Pharmacy is requesting information with pharmacy resources not lactation resources. But, I’m more familiar with lactation focused resources.
I need some good pharmacy resources, references, and or articles for them which introduces and talks about evaluating risk/benefit and possibly strategies to minimize/manage them. Is there any?
Thanks,
Rachel Miller
