Dear Ilene:
If you look at the GOLD Lactation Conference line-up, you will see plenty
of next generations presenting. They also present in statewide coalitions
and in USLCA webinars.
Many have their own businesses and offer courses, training, and webinars. I
am on, offering an on-line 20-hour basic breastfeeding course, based on the
2016 US BFHI outline.
The new generations are doing it differently than did we, because their
world is different.
WIC staff now include breastfeeding peer counselors, as well as CLCs and
IBCLCs. There are host of credentialed lactation service providers besides
those. ROSE, Baby Café, Healthy Children, BreastfeedingUSA, CHAMPS and
other organizations are offering local and hospital support. LLL is still
alive...YAY!
Remember too that when we started, there was no BabyFriendly Hospital
Initiative. And there was no CDC keeping track of who is breastfeeding;
all we had for any numbers was Ross Marketing data.
I am sad at how many of this new generation accept formula as a given part
of the infant feeding equation. I started my career during a Nestlé
boycott, believing that I didn't need or want to know about formulae,
because breastfeeding information was scarce and we lactivists were
fighting to get breastfeeding on the map. Now there is an Infant Feeding
Specialist certification course.
Now too, since last Fall, physicians can become Board-certified in
Breastfeeding Medicine via the North American Board of Breastfeeding and
Lactation Medicine.
We are still fighting, up against a $55 billion/year marketing industry
that buys legislators to influence public policy and sow doubt and fear
into the public mind.
I thought by the time I died, that breastfeeding would be the cultural
norm. It isn't. AND, many many more babies than when I started have been
and continue to be breastfed.
warmly,
Nikki Lee, she/her/hers
