Hello,
  I am searching my resources for a clear, concise article highlighting what is normal newborn feeding behavior the first 24 hours. We still have some staff that get very nervous when baby is sleepy that first 24 hours (after a good first feed), or have a belly full of amniotic fluid and just are not interested in latching for awhile. I talk about the normal sleepiness with the moms and encourage them to hand express and keep baby skin to skin, but occasionally I have come in the next day and the night nurse has tried some "creative" ways to get baby interested in sucking (pacifier with syringe, nipple shield, etc).   Usually these babies perk up the next day and latch just beautifully!  What resources (handouts, printed material) do you use to encourage mom and staff that hand expression is okay and a baby may not be interested in latching  frequently that first 24 hours (specifically reassuring that this behavior can be normal and what signs to look for)?
