We have lanolin based ointment at both hospitals where I work. Problem is, the REgistered Nurses hand it out to “fix” or prevent sore nipples or just because. If they are giving out an intervention, there should be a “problem” and an understanding what they are doing. If a mother has nipple pain or damage, the first intervention should be fixing the latch and a good consult, not throwing some ointment on it and calling them good to go. BTW, I have never seen any research that nipple ointments prevent anything and there is research that women who use nipple ointments have higher rates of mastitis (from bacteria from mother’s unwashed hands in applying (easy fix).
