Another option for making pumping more 'doable': Encourage mom to put
the pump together in her living area, or wherever she spends most of her
time, and only clean the kit every 4-6 hours, environment and the baby's
health permitting (human milk stays good at room temp at least that
long). She can put a clean cloth over the kit to protect it between
uses. This way it's way less work to just pump for a few minutes very
very often. She can also consider putting the entire kit in the fridge
in a plastic bag (just beware of condensation in the tubing, if the kit
is not a closed system this can lead to mold growth).
Teaching manual expression can also work better. Once mom gets the hang
of it, it's much easier for her to just express a bit after each feeding
with her hand than mess with the pump.
Sermon of the day: - we have to be cautious of blaming mothers when our
care plan is more than they can manage, and make sure that as Gail said,
mothers understand the principles behind what we've recommended. Then
it's best if we work collaboratively with mothers to problem-solve any
issues with implementing the plan. Sometimes it's mom's anxiety that
gets in the way, sometimes it's logistics, but talking about what makes
it difficult to express milk (or any other component of the plan) in a
non-judgmental way leads us to insights and solutions, not blame!
Okay, that's my three posts today, back to writing.

I have never known anyone other than the mom who was in charge of assembling, storing and washing pump parts. Tedious and time consuming. And very unlike breastfeeding. And pretty much incompatible with interacting with your baby. So to maximize your bf experience, you have to give up time with your baby and assemble pump parts? Is it any wonder that Moms have a problem following through with this?
