Hi all,

Here in Spain, a traditionally catholic country, there is no ban and no
problem with breastfeeding imagery of Mary and Jesus. They are all over the
place!! Not only museums, but churches, cathedrals, basilicas.

One of my favorite is a statue at the magnificent Burgos Cathedral, a
Virgin Mary with a three year old (give or take half a year) baby Jesus who
has just come off the breast - and the breast is out there, full and
lovely. Mothers adore that statue. You can see it in this blog if you

Then there is also the legend of St. Bernard, in which he received milk
from Mary´s breast (great depiction of hand expression) as a symbol of
grace, wisdom and sustenance. Also widely depicted and, despite the title
of this blog, not considered scandalous by the general public.

Finally, here is a good web page to find images of breastfeeding in
statues, postal stamps, commercials, postcards, etc. It is the work of a
wonderful Spanish pediatrician, Dr Jose Maria Paricio.
