Hi. A question for you anthropologists/ social scientists out there (hi Jessica :) )
I work on a large maternity unit with patients from many diverse cultures. Skin to skin does not go over big with some of them. One of our largest groups are moms from Russia who generally believe in scheduling and swaddling. They prefer to swaddle after feedings and putting the baby back in the cot. Many moms are open to trying this new way, but many are not. We mention evidence based studies and show videos but it is not a comfortable concept. I want to recognize the knowledge that they have brought with them from their countries. Indeed, many patients come from countries where breastfeeding has been a lot more successful over the years. I also want these babies (who have probably had more intrapartum and postpartum medical intervention than they would have), off to the best start possible. Any ideas?
Along the same line of thought, does anyone have Russian and Ukraine language information on skin to skin and laid back nursing?
Thanks,
M Westra R.N., IBCLC
