Infant is 12 weeks old - began rejecting the breast at about 8 weeks old. As per the assessment of the lactation consultant, baby is not achieving a vacuumed suck at either the breast or bottle. And, as per suggestion of the lactation consultant, Mom transitioned to a level 2 Dr. Brown's nipple since baby was fatiguing from drinking from a level 1 nipple and was not getting adequate nutrition. Now, from the level 2 nipple, baby is consuming at least 25 oz. of pumped breast milk per day. Mom is doing strengthening/stretching exercises with the baby as per the instruction of a speech-language pathologist, and Mom would like baby to successfully get back on the breast. Baby will suckle from the breast while in a sleepy state, but is not drinking more than 1 to 2 oz from the breast at a feeding. Since baby's intake has dramatically increased in the past 48 hours, she is experiencing digestive discomfort. Mom hopes that discomfort will resolve.
Is Mom following the right protocol? Any responses to this situation?
