Pamela,
Thanks for your very complete response about bf and HIV+. Here in the US, I
fear, they assume a mother who is HIV+ is also "probably" a drug user or
have risky sexual behavior which they cannot easily test for or control.so
they just use their "blanket" statements (just as no one should ever sleep
with a baby) to protect themselves from lawsuits.
Recommendations here are based on Insurance and lawsuit risks rather than
medical risks, I fear!
Just as the AAP's recommendation for breastfeeding "beyond 12 months" is
also dropped in talks and handouts, this more complex response on HIV and
breastfeeding is likely to be ignored unless we continue to add it on during
presentations and communications with Health Care Providers.
Unfortunately, in my circles, I do not even hear the question being asked -
it is assumed to be a "no, never, under any circumstance".
