I had surgery on my ankle many years ago under an epidural anaesthetic, and it worked very well. I was worried about being awake for it (they had to put in metal plates and screws) but the anaesthetist did a great job of talking to me and keeping me distracted through the whole process. And my recovery was so quick - as soon as the surgery was done and the epidural wore off I felt back to normal. The nurses commented on it as well, and I would definitely use that approach again.

Subject: General or spinal anaesthesia?

Hi there

I have been contacted by a mom who needs to have foot surgery. Her baby is 9 months old and is breastfeeding 5 or so times per day. They have offered mom a choice between general and spinal for the procedure. While she doesn't really want to be awake for the surgery, she does want to do what will impact breastfeeding the least. Does anyone have any input?

thanks,
Sonya

In addition to any effects of the anesthesia , this mom may want to consider time away from her baby.

ABM Clinical Protocol #15: Analgesia and Anesthesia for the Breastfeeding Mother is available online  http://www.bfmed.org/Media/Files/Protocols/Protocol_15_revised_2012.pdf

Among other things, it says:

Mothers with normal term or older infants can generally resume breastfeeding as soon as they are awake [following general anesthetic], stable, and alert. Resumption of normal mentation is a hallmark that these medications have redistributed from the plasma compartment (and thus generally the milk compartment) and entered adipose and muscle tissue where they are slowly released.

I am trying to find out more information about IBMP (Institute for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research).  I believe they have a connection to Prolacta?  Can anyone throw some light on this company - its ethics etc?
