These types of studies are always concerning, pop up periodically, and are
sometimes conducted and funded by organizations wishing to urge the public
and government to clean up the environment--an important imperative. Using
breastmilk as the canary in the mine is frequently done because it is an
easy vehicle to measure compared with blood or urine samples. It is also
used for its shock value with little thought as to how such information
might affect families who wish to nurse their infant. Toxic interlopers
were recently found in baby foods. The presence of heavy metals such
as arsenic,
lead, cadmium, and mercury prompted all sorts of action by the government
to the point of proposed legislation to limit the amounts of these
contaminants in baby food. Parents should be reassured that human milk is
still safer and more advantageous than infant formula, itself noted to
contain ingredients that could be problematic to infants.
