Catherine Watson Genna brings up an interesting point I'd like to discuss. She mentions: "As lactation
"matures" it is harder to expand supply, so I recommend maintaining hers." This is so true! So, what do we do for these moms 4, 6, 9 months in that are starting to either loose supply or just can't keep up with demand? I'm talking all things normal with baby, we just need more volume. I do calcium and magnesium if menstrual cycle has returned (or is suspicious of returning). Mom is not pregnant. A lot of these moms are working moms, but on a reasonable pumping schedule. Sometimes I can't figure out why supply is dipping. We discuss herbs (fenugreek, blessed thistle, GoLacta), power pumping, pumping after nursing, pumping before bed, but usually we barely increase supply if at all. These poor moms do all this extra work and have very little to show for it. I've found most babies at this age aren't willing to just keep nursing to get supply up. What else can we do? I tend to blame hormones just to give mom an answer, but I'd like to help more and provide a better explanation. Thanks, Mandy Schaub, MS, RD, IBCLC
