My name is Elien Rouw. I am an MD, living and working in Germany and active
member of ABM. Allthough I almost always read Lactnet, I seldom post, but I
feel very strong about this subject. Yes, women are paying for breastfeeding
and for all other caring they do. The society is profiting, when women are
breastfeeding, but they themselves pay for services, and even in the long
run they loose, because they will get less as retirement pension (at least
in Germany). About this topic I have written an article in Int. BF. Journal
"the high costs of half-hearted breastfeeding promotion in Germany". It is
free to read, and if I may add: I think this is not only true for Germany.

Quintessence: When mothers take care of their children (breastfeeding,
nurturing, caring), society profits, but they themselves get paid less, now
and in the future. When they don't take care (bottle feeding, full time job,
and so on) they get rewarded and society looses. But for some/many women
around the world it is not a choice to not taking care themselves for their
children, to not breastfeeding, but a necessity to earn some money. And we
all loose by this.

I sort of skimmed thru it, she kept emphasizing the time it takes to
breastfeed.....what about the time to go to the store, buy the formula, mix
it, heat it, wash the bottles.  I realize someone else can do all of that
and only mom can bf, but whose time is being better spent, the mom who is
running to the store, making, washing etc -paying attention to everything,
but the baby or the mom  with baby in her arms?  Pat in SNJ"

*high five*  That's what I was thinking.  It's usually the mom who ends up
bottle feeding, shopping, washing dishes, taking that sick child to the
doctor, missing work so she can take sick child to the doctor...

Maybe this article is really saying that if you're a stay at home mom, you
have no excuse for choosing to artificially feed.

Taking time at work to pump can be a major hassle, though.  That's totally
real.  And you either take that time out of your day, meaning you don't get
paid your hourly wage for it, or you have to work more hours to make up that
time, meaning you're separated from your baby for longer.
