I've wondered this too. Occasionally I find a woman that we cannot even get a single drop of colostrum from her breasts with hand expression, but her milk comes in normally. The other day we had a patient that hand expressed 100 ml on day 2 (very rare indeed). I would also like to know if the person who can hand express 3 ml on day one will have an easier time with milk production that the person who gets less than 1 ml. I think some people seem to have a harder time with expression when they have a lot of dense breast tissue right behind the areola.
