Shekoli:
Thank you so much for your words. We need all the angles to helping babies
which we can. I appreciate what you wrote.
There are no cookie cutter answers to breastfeeding issues, I feel. One
position doesn't work for everyone. Where to place hands for breast
compressions is different for everyone. Nipple sizes - different.
Some babies with a tie have fantastic function. A lot don't. I do feel
exercises and body work are very important.
I have done reiki on babes who had things going on (I'm a reiki master).
They successfully nursed after the reiki session. I don't believe that was
just a coincidence. It helped moms to successfully breastfeed.
I'm tongue tied. Mom didn't try to nurse us. I had no issues (outside of
saying my Rs). I didn't need braces, digest fine, no sleep issues. THEN -
while looking up elocution lessons on youtube, I came across this tongue
exercise (circling inside of my mouth with my tongue - going one way 8X,
other way 8X, then 7, etc). Wow. My singing voice after that had more
durability, more strength, and my upper and lower ranges were more
powerful. That was after doing the exercise ONCE - it relaxed my tense
muscles; muscles I didn't know were tense because it was my 'normal'. My
tongue, throat, and neck muscles are sore during the exercises, but it is
worth it. If I knew about this decades ago, maybe I would have made it onto
Broadway LOL
I'm 48. Three of my 4 kids are tongue tied - nursed beautifully for 3 years
or more each. They need braces. Two were in speech therapy for years, until
they aged out. The only child of mine who snores is the one NOT tongue
tied. Go figure :P
As LC's, we are not here to give one option. We are here to give options,
have informed choice discussions about these options - personal opinions
aside. I am grateful I was trained as an Indigenous Midwife prior to
becoming an LC - it opened my mind to many different ways of thinking which
being trained in a University would never have taught me.
Studies won't fully be done and published to the satisfaction of doctors
and others because there is no money in it. Relying on studies alone in our
informed choice discussions is dangerous. There is enough anecdotal
evidence to at least bring it to the table.
Off my soapbox now,
Steph
