Hello,
Permission to post: I’m helping a mom who has a five-day-old, her second baby, and who describes needle-sharp pain (like broken glass in her milk ducts) with each suck as the baby feeds. The pain is described as internal, and she’s not having nipple pain. Mom says: “The extreme pain is in the side that he's nursing on, as he sucks. There is pain in the other side when I get letdowns but it is duller than the sharp pains in the nursing side.”
There’s some normal engorgement; she says pain is worse before and during let-down and then subsides somewhat. She had the same pain while nursing baby #1, but was hoping this time would be different. It was a home birth, no antibiotics during delivery. Any thoughts on what could be causing this, or advice for mom?
Many thanks,
Sarah Bedford, IBCLC, LLLL
