Dear Lactnet Friends:

Yes cannabis is stronger than in the past, which means our public health
focus needs to be on 3 things:

1) Pregnant ladies shouldn't smoke anything as smoking takes oxygen and
other nutrients away from the baby.

2) Parents should keep ALL smoke away from their babies because 1st, 2nd or
3rd hand smoke make babies sick. (We know tobacco is a risk for SIDS; will
cannabis turn out to be so too? We'll find out.)

3) Parents need to be sober and ready to respond quickly to their babies.
If they are drunk or stoned, baby should sleep on a separate surface.

It is interesting, now that I think about it, that women are prosecuted for
ingesting substances that could hurt babies, but no family has ever been
prosecuted for having tobacco in the home (that is a major risk factor for
SIDS) nor for feeding formula (that doubles the risk of SIDS). Instead, the
focus is on keeping babies away from their habitat-niche at night.

Folks aren't still high, once that effect wears off, even though they will
test positive for THC for a long time. Babies won't be high either.

It doesn't matter what parents are smoking. Smoking is bad for babies.

Tobacco comes in various strengths too, depending on the source of the
tobacco (example: the French brand Gitanes versus Marlboro Lights versus
rolling one's own). Or pipe versus snuff versus chewing tobacco.

warmly,
