My mother told me that her mother breastfed her in the 1920's right through
the depression. I always pictured her in an old fashioned car when my
grandfather drove from Youngstown, Ohio to El Paso Texas in search of work.

My mother also told me how heartbroken she was when she was told she had to
bottle feed me two days after her general anesthesia delivery.

One day in my Oral Pathology course in college the male professor said we
should all breastfeed and go to La Leche League. I had it in bold letters
on the top of my notetaking page. I never forgot.

I had never seen a baby breastfeeding before my first child was born.
Luckily I was able to visit a neighbor who was breastfeeding her new baby.
After my daughter was born I made sure to go to a LLL meeting where I saw a
baby next to me suckling and drifting off to sleep. That's when I really
understood what it was all about!
