 The association between common labor drugs and suckling when skin-to-skin during the first hour after birth, Brimdyr, K. et al.  Birth 42;4, Dec 2015.  Says fentanyl and synthetic Oxytocin significantly decreased baby suckling.


Associations of drugs routinely given in labour with breastfeeding at 48 hours: analysis of the Cardiff Births Survey.  Jordan, S. et al. bjog.org, 1622-1632.Int J Ob and Gyn,  Says epidural analgesia, IM opiod analgesia and ergometrine show lower BF rates at 48 hours.

Relationship between use of labor pain medications and delayed onset of lactation.  Lind, JN et al.  JHL. 30(2) 167-173. 2014.  says 23.4% of women who received pain med (not spinal/epidural) experienced delayed onset of lactation.

There are MANY articles from the 90's about negative effects caused by pain med, extra oxytocin and epidurals, none of them say nice things about these meds.  Pat in SNJ
