The 2010 recommendations are available at http://www.who.int/maternal_child_adolescent/documents/9789241599535/en/
I wasn't commenting on the difference in recommendations between developing or developed countries, just noting that assessment of feeding conditions and recommendations should be done at a national level rather than at an individual level...in practice this means that health professionals present the recommendations for their country to parents. Of course parents will decide for themselves whether to follow the recommendations and they may decide against recommendations and breastfeed or formula feed when national recommendations are otherwise. The concept of discussing AFASS with individuals and providing counselling to assist individuals to decide what feeding method would be best was dropped as it was an abject failure and did not actually assist women to make informed decisions.

It's not recommended individually or through national authorities. It's been an interesting discussion, but the person who posted about the improvement in babies with HIV was again writing about developing countries. We are talking about a developed nation in which formula is affordable, feasible, safe, available and sustainable. Our hospital is in the Baby Friendly process and this is currently being taught as part of the staff training for BFHI, I would be interested in reading any other recommendations. Thank you,
